The one thing that isn't optional
The box
A ceiling fan is heavier and, critically, it moves. Rotational force and continuous vibration act on that box every hour the fan runs.
A fan-rated box is a different product. It's built for the load and anchored properly — either fixed directly to a joist, or carried on a brace bar that spans between joists and transfers the weight into the structure rather than into the drywall.
Mounting a fan to a standard fixture box is the most common serious error in this trade. It doesn't fail immediately, which is exactly the problem: it works loose over months of vibration, and by the time anyone notices, the fixture is being held by hardware that was never asked to do this.
You often can't tell by looking. Fan-rated and standard boxes can appear similar from below. Checking the rating and the mounting is part of every install we do — and where it needs replacing, that's in the quote before we start rather than discovered on the day.

Why fans wobble
A wobbling fan isn't just irritating — the movement works at the mounting hardware continuously.
- The mount isn't tight or isn't level. Bracket screws not fully torqued, or a box that isn't square to the ceiling. The most common cause, and entirely preventable at installation.
- The blades aren't matched. Blades vary slightly in weight and pitch. Sets are meant to be balanced as a group, and swapping a single damaged blade often introduces wobble.
- Blade brackets are bent. Easily done in shipping or handling, and enough to throw the whole assembly.
- Something is loose upstream. A box working loose from the structure — the serious version, and why a fan that has developed a new wobble is worth looking at rather than living with.

A ceiling fan motor should not be run from a standard lighting dimmer. It causes humming, overheating, and premature motor failure. Fans need a proper fan speed control, or the speed control built into the fan itself. If your fan hums at low speed, this is the first thing to check.

Before you buy
Sizing and placement
- Blade span. Larger rooms need a larger span to move air effectively. Bedrooms and offices typically suit spans in the region of 42 to 52 inches; large living areas and open-plan spaces often want 52 inches or more. Long or irregular rooms sometimes work better with two smaller fans than one large one.
- Ceiling height and mounting. Standard ceilings take a standard downrod. Low ceilings — under roughly eight feet — usually call for a flush or hugger mount, since blades generally need around seven feet of clearance above the floor. High ceilings need a longer downrod, because a fan mounted tight to a twelve-foot ceiling stirs air nobody can feel.
- Sloped and vaulted ceilings. Need a canopy or adapter rated for the pitch. Confirm the fan supports your slope before buying.
- Clearance. Blades need room from walls, sloped surfaces, beams, and light fixtures. Tight corners are worth mentioning during assessment.
- Position. Centred in the space you actually use, not necessarily centred in the room — and clear of where a door swings or a bed sits.

Installing a standard indoor fan in either location is a common shortcut and a genuinely poor one. Moisture reaches the motor and wiring, corrosion follows, and the failure mode is electrical in a place where people are often wet or barefoot. Getting the airflow right
- Fans cool people, not rooms. A ceiling fan doesn't lower air temperature — it moves air across skin. Running one in an empty room accomplishes nothing but consumption. Switch it off when you leave.
- Use the direction switch. Most fans have a small reversing switch on the motor housing. In warm weather, blades turning counterclockwise viewed from below push air down and create the cooling draught. In cold weather, running clockwise on low pulls air up and gently pushes warm air off the ceiling back down the walls — genuinely useful in rooms with high ceilings.
- Pair it with the thermostat. Because a fan makes a room feel cooler than it is, many households find they can raise the thermostat a little and stay comfortable. That's where cooling cost savings actually come from.
- Clean the blades. Dust builds unevenly and is a common cause of wobble.
