  3. Whether there are free spaces. Empty slots, or blanked-off ones. Also look for two thin breakers in one slot, or two wires under one breaker screw — both are signs the panel has run out of room.

No space left for new circuits

The most common trigger. You want a circuit for a workshop, an EV charger, an addition, or a hot tub, and there's nowhere to land it.

Tandem breakers or double-tapped wires

Two slim breakers in one slot, or two conductors under a single terminal. Sometimes acceptable by design, often not — and either way, a sign the panel is beyond what it was laid out for.

A fuse box rather than breakers

Fuse panels aren't automatically unsafe if intact, but they're limited in capacity, easy to defeat with an oversized fuse, and many insurers now object to them.

60-amp or 100-amp service with modern demands

Adequate when installed. A modern household with electric cooking, air conditioning, a heat pump, or EV charging can outgrow it — though not always, which is what the load calculation is for.

Breakers that trip regularly

Repeated tripping on multiple circuits usually means the panel and its circuits are carrying more than they were designed for.

Lights dimming when large appliances start

A momentary dip when the air conditioner or a well pump kicks in can indicate the service is working near its limit.

Heat, buzzing, rust, or scorching at the panel

Warm breakers, a humming panel, corrosion, or discolouration around terminals. Any of these should be looked at promptly rather than scheduled at leisure.

The panel is decades old

Seven common omissions

  • Grounding and bonding. Older properties frequently have grounding electrode systems that no longer meet current requirements. Replacing a panel typically triggers bringing this up to standard — ground rods, bonding to water and gas piping where required, correct conductor sizing. A quote that ignores it either doesn't know or is planning to raise it mid-job.
  • AFCI and GFCI protection. A new panel usually means circuits get the protection current code requires. Those breakers cost meaningfully more than standard ones, and leaving them out makes the number look better.
  • Permit and inspection fees. Non-negotiable, and occasionally omitted.
  • Meter base and service entrance. On a service upgrade, the meter base, conductors, and mast frequently need replacing too. Quoting the panel alone understates the job.
  • Utility coordination. Disconnect and reconnect has to be scheduled, and in some areas carries a fee.
  • Drywall and finish work. New panels are sometimes larger than the old ones. Ask what condition the wall will be left in.
  • Circuit labelling and testing. Should be included. Ask.
