This explains why diagnosis takes time, and why the repair often isn't where the problem showed up.
Power arrives at one box, and conductors continue on to the next, and the next. A failed connection at the first box kills every outlet after it — while the failed box itself may look completely normal. That's the same problem that shows up as "three outlets dead and no obvious reason."
One GFCI device can protect a run of ordinary outlets beyond it. Trip that GFCI and everything downstream goes dead — potentially in rooms nowhere near the device.
A single circuit may cover part of a bedroom, a hallway, and an exterior outlet. Panel labels are frequently wrong or missing, which is why an electrician's first job is often working out what's actually on what.
So why does it take so long to find? Because a fault gives no directional information. Testing your way to the failed connection is the job — and once found, the fix itself is usually quick.

Some things speed it up considerably, and they're worth mentioning when you call: when it started, what changed around then, whether it's intermittent or constant, which other outlets or fixtures are affected, and whether any work has been done in the property recently. Even a rough answer narrows the search.

Dead outlets and dead circuits
A single outlet, a group of them, or a whole room without power while the breaker appears fine. Usually a failed connection somewhere on the run.
Breakers that trip repeatedly
Occasional tripping under obvious overload is the breaker working. Regular tripping means a circuit carrying more than it should, a fault on the line, or a breaker that's worn out.
Flickering or dimming lights
A single fixture flickering is usually the bulb, fixture, or switch. Flickering across the property — particularly if some rooms brighten while others dim — is a different and more urgent problem.
Switches that don't work reliably
Switches needing a knack, working intermittently, or feeling loose. Devices are mechanical and they wear out.
Three-way switches behaving oddly
Stairway and hallway lights that only work from one position, or only when the other switch is in a certain state. Almost always a wiring or device fault at one of the two points.
GFCI outlets that won't reset
A GFCI refusing to reset is usually detecting something real — moisture, a faulty appliance, or a wiring fault downstream. Sometimes the device itself has failed. Either way it's telling you something.
Outlets that don't hold a plug
The internal contacts have lost tension. It's a wear item, and a loose plug connection generates heat.
Bulbs burning out too fast
Loose connections, fixtures being run above their rated wattage, vibration, or a supply issue. Rarely bad luck, usually a cause.
Dimmer problems
Buzzing, flickering, limited range, or fixtures that won't dim smoothly — commonly a compatibility mismatch between dimmer and LED load.
Half-working outlets
Where only one half of a receptacle has power. Often a switched outlet working as designed, sometimes a broken tab or failed connection.
Ceiling fan and fixture faults
Fixtures that don't respond, fans running on some speeds only, and wiring faults at ceiling boxes.
Root causes
What actually causes most faults
- Loose terminations. The single most common cause. Conductors pushed into the spring-clip holes on the back of a device — rather than secured under the screw terminals — are quicker to install and far more likely to lose contact over time. Heat, vibration, and thermal cycling do the rest. When we find intermittent or dead circuits in a home, this is where it usually ends.
- Worn-out devices. Outlets and switches have a service life. Contacts fatigue, springs weaken, mechanisms fail. In a house with original devices from decades ago, some of them are simply finished.
- Overloaded circuits. More load than the circuit was designed for, often because how a room is used has changed — a bedroom became an office, a garage became a workshop.
- Damaged conductors. Nails and screws through cable during other work, rodent damage in attics and crawlspaces, and crushed cable behind fixtures.
- Water ingress. Leaks reaching boxes, fixtures, or exterior devices. This corrodes connections and can create fault paths.
- Aluminum branch wiring. Connections at devices loosen through expansion and contraction cycles, creating high-resistance joints that heat.
- Previous DIY work. Undersized conductors, missing boxes, unsecured splices, reversed polarity, and grounds left unconnected. Often invisible until something stops working.

The honest limit
When repair isn't the right answer
Sometimes the honest recommendation is bigger than the call.
- When the same fault keeps recurring in different places on the same system, the installation method or the wiring itself is the issue rather than any individual connection.
- When the panel is full, obsolete, or a known-problem type, adding circuits or chasing faults around it has limits.
- When the wiring is at end of life — brittle insulation, extensive knob and tube, or damage throughout — repeated repairs cost more over a few years than doing it once.

Prevention
Reducing electrical faults
- Don't overload circuits. Power strips and adapters stacked into one outlet is a sign the room needs more circuits, not more adapters.
- Replace worn devices. An outlet that no longer grips a plug is generating heat at the contacts.
- Test GFCIs periodically using their test and reset buttons. They're protective devices and they do fail.
- Keep the panel labelled and accessible. It shortens every future call.
- Match dimmers to your fixtures. Most flickering and buzzing complaints are LED compatibility rather than faults.
- Address flickering early, particularly if it affects more than one room.
- Be careful with fasteners near cable runs. Nails and screws through cable during renovations are a common and entirely preventable fault.

Why did several outlets stop working at once?
Outlets are usually daisy-chained, so a failed connection at one box kills everything downstream of it. A tripped GFCI does the same thing, sometimes to outlets in other rooms.
