Older wiring: what's repairable and what isn't

Ungrounded two-prong circuits You can't create a ground by fitting a three-prong receptacle — that produces an outlet that looks grounded and isn't, which is worse than the original. The legitimate options are running a ground, or installing GFCI protection and labelling the outlets accordingly where that's permitted.
Aluminum branch circuits Not inherently unusable, but the terminations are the weak point — expansion and contraction loosen them, and loose connections heat. There are approved remediation methods using specific connectors at each device. Whether remediation or replacement makes more sense depends on the property's condition and sometimes on your insurer's requirements.
Knob and tube Ungrounded, easily damaged by later work, and problematic where insulation has been added around it. Individual repairs are sometimes possible, but a property still substantially on knob and tube is usually a rewiring conversation.
Cloth and rubber-insulated cable Insulation becomes brittle and crumbles away from the conductor, particularly where it's been handled at the panel and at junction boxes. Repairs here tend to reveal more of the same.
