Burning smell with no source
An acrid, hot-plastic smell near outlets, switches, fixtures, or the panel. This is overheating insulation, and it is the single most important warning sign in this list. If you can smell it, treat it as urgent.
Sparking, arcing, or buzzing
Visible sparks when plugging something in, a crackle or buzz from a switch, outlet, or the panel. Arcing generates extreme heat in a very small area, which is precisely how electrical fires start.
A hot panel, outlet, or switch plate
Cover plates and breakers should be at room temperature. Warmth means resistance where there shouldn't be any — a loose termination, an overloaded circuit, or a failing component.
Scorch marks or discolouration
Browning or blackening around an outlet, switch, or breaker means heat has already been present. The absence of an active symptom doesn't mean it's resolved.
Lights brightening and dimming on their own

Seven things that help
- Stop using the affected circuit. Switch it off at the breaker if you can identify it and reach the panel safely.
- Unplug what's on it. Especially anything that felt warm, smelled odd, or was running when the problem started.
- Don't keep resetting a breaker. If it trips again immediately, leave it off.
- Move away from anything sparking or hot. Don't investigate it, don't open a panel, don't remove a faceplate.
- If you smell burning and can't find it, and switching off the panel is safe to do, do that — and wait outside for us if the smell is strong.
- Note what changed. New appliance, recent work, storm, leak, or a specific moment it started. It's frequently the fastest route to the fault.
- Keep the panel accessible. Clear anything stacked in front of it before we arrive.

- Don't put water on an electrical fire. Water conducts. If there's fire, get out and call 911.
- Don't force a breaker that won't hold. It's detecting a fault. Repeatedly resetting it removes the protection without removing the problem.
- Don't backfeed a generator into a wall outlet. Connecting a portable generator to household wiring without a proper transfer switch pushes power back onto utility lines and can kill line workers. It's also illegal in most jurisdictions. Generators connect to appliances directly, or through a professionally installed transfer switch.
- Don't open the panel. The main breaker's supply terminals stay live even with the main switched off.
- Don't tape over or ignore a scorched outlet. Heat has already been present there.
- Don't run extension cords as a workaround for a dead circuit. That's how the next fault becomes a fire.
- Don't touch anything electrical while standing in water, including the panel — call the utility instead.
