Why not just use an existing outlet?

Four shortcuts that circulate

  • The old dryer outlet in the garage. Different receptacle configurations, often on a circuit sized for intermittent use rather than hours of continuous draw, and frequently without the grounding arrangement current requirements expect. EV charging is a sustained load — that's the important difference.
  • Extension cords. Not for EV charging. Sustained current through an undersized or coiled cord generates heat, and this is a genuinely common source of incidents.
  • Sharing a circuit. EV charging is treated as a continuous load and generally requires its own dedicated circuit.

Connection type

Hardwired or plug-in?

Both are legitimate. The trade-offs are real.

Plug-in Uses a 240-volt receptacle — commonly a NEMA 14-50 — with the charger plugged into it. You can unplug and take the charger when you move, and replacing a failed unit doesn't require an electrician. Note that receptacle installations for EV charging generally require GFCI protection under current requirements, which adds cost and can occasionally cause nuisance tripping with some charger and vehicle combinations.
Hardwired Connects the charger directly to the circuit. Required for the highest amperage units, generally the more robust connection, usually preferred outdoors and in some jurisdictions, and it avoids the receptacle GFCI interaction. Replacing or removing the unit needs an electrician.
