Whole house, or what matters?
Typically heating, refrigeration, a few lighting circuits, well or sump pump, garage door, and outlets for phones and medical equipment. Usually enough to make an outage a nuisance rather than an emergency, and it allows a considerably smaller and cheaper unit.
Everything, including the large loads — central air conditioning, electric range, electric water heating, EV charging. Requires a much larger generator and, on propane, a much larger tank.
Many modern standby systems include load management, which sheds or staggers large loads automatically so a smaller generator can serve a whole panel — running the air conditioning or the range, rather than needing capacity for both simultaneously. That frequently allows a meaningfully smaller unit for the same practical result.

The critical equipment
Transfer switches, interlocks, and why backfeeding kills
A generator must never be able to feed your house and the utility grid at the same time. That separation is the entire purpose of this equipment.
Backfeeding has none of this Running a cord from a generator into a wall outlet energises your household wiring and, through the service, the utility lines outside — which is how line workers are killed during restoration. It's illegal in most jurisdictions and it will not be part of anything we install.
Fuel
What each one costs you in practice
Natural gas
No refuelling, no storage, no run-time limit as long as the gas supply holds. Requires an adequately sized gas line — a generator is a large appliance and existing piping is often undersized for it, which is a common add-on cost. Units generally produce slightly less output on natural gas than on propane.
Propane
Stores well, burns cleanly, and works where there's no gas service. The constraint is tank size: run time is finite, and a multi-day outage means planning refills — during the same event everyone else is planning refills. Size the tank for the outage you're actually preparing for.
Diesel
Common in larger and commercial applications. Fuel storage, periodic turnover, and cold-weather handling all need managing.
Petrol (portables)
Convenient and widely available, but stores poorly without stabiliser, requires you to be present to refuel, and means keeping fuel on the property safely.
Fuel choice usually follows what's already at the property. Where there's a choice, it's mostly a trade between refuelling hassle and installation cost.
Position
Placement, clearances, and noise
- Clearances matter and they're not negotiable. Standby generators have manufacturer-specified minimum distances from the building, and code and local rules add requirements around windows, doors, and air intakes — because exhaust must not find its way indoors.
- Property line setbacks apply in many municipalities, and some have noise ordinances that affect placement or permitted exercise times.
- Noise. Standby units are considerably quieter than portables but not silent, and they run a weekly or monthly exercise cycle. Placement relative to your own bedrooms and your neighbours' is worth thinking about before the pad is poured.
