Three specs that decide whether you'll like it

Nearly all lighting regret traces to one of these.

  1. Colour temperature Printed on the box, in Kelvin
    2700KWarm, close to old incandescent light

    5000KDaylight-white, and in most homes unforgiving

    Pick one and use it consistently in a space. Mixing temperatures in one room is what makes lighting look wrong without people being able to say why.

  2. Lumens, not watts Watts measure consumption, not output
    With LEDs the number that matters is lumens. Buying "60-watt equivalent" without checking lumens is how rooms end up dimmer than expected.
  3. Dimmable — and compatible The two are not the same thing
    "Dimmable" on the box doesn't mean it works with your existing dimmer. Most flicker and buzz complaints are a mismatch between LED fixtures and a dimmer designed for incandescent loads. If you want dimming, the dimmer and the fixtures need to be chosen together.

Why some rooms feel wrong

Colour temperature does more to the feel of a room than fixture style does.

Warmer light — around 2700K–3000K Suits living rooms, bedrooms, and dining spaces. Flattering, reads as relaxed, and closest to what people are used to from incandescent lighting.
Neutral light — around 3500K–4000K Works in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and workshops, where seeing accurately matters more than atmosphere.
Cool or daylight — 5000K and up Belongs in workshops, garages, and task-specific applications. In a living room it tends to feel stark.

There's a second number worth knowing: CRI, or colour rendering index. It describes how accurately a light source shows colour. Low-CRI lighting is why food can look grey in some kitchens, and why makeup applied in one bathroom looks wrong everywhere else. For kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere colour matters, higher-CRI fixtures are worth the modest premium.

Consistency matters more than the specific choice. A room with three different colour temperatures in it will look off regardless of which ones they are.

Layout

What actually makes a room work

A single ceiling fixture in the middle of a room produces flat light and shadows in the corners. Good lighting uses layers.

AmbientThe general fill — recessed, ceiling fixtures, or coves. It sets the level.
TaskLight aimed where work happens: under-cabinet lighting on counters, pendants over an island, reading lights, vanity lighting at face height rather than overhead.
AccentWhat gives a room depth — picture lights, shelf lighting, wall washing.

Most rooms that feel badly lit have ambient only. Kitchens are the clearest example: overhead recessed light puts you between the fixture and the counter, so you work in your own shadow. Under-cabinet lighting fixes what more ceiling fixtures can't.

Bathrooms are the other common one. Light from directly overhead casts shadows downward across the face. Vanity lighting at either side of a mirror is a noticeably better result than a single fixture above it.

Cans, canless, and spacing

Traditional recessed cans

A housing installed in the ceiling with a trim and lamp fitted into it. Well established, wide trim selection.

Canless LED fixtures

Sometimes called wafer or disc lights — a thin LED unit with a separate driver that clips into the ceiling opening. Substantially easier in a finished ceiling and needing far less depth above it. For a room that's already finished, this is often the difference between a straightforward job and a difficult one.

Spacing and beam angle

These matter more than quantity. Too few and you get pools and shadows; too many and the ceiling looks like an airport. Fixtures too close to walls cause glare; too far apart and the light is uneven. A narrow beam and a wide beam at the same spacing produce very different rooms.

IC rating

Where a fixture will contact insulation — most ceilings with an attic above — it must be rated for it. This is a fire safety requirement, not a preference. Airtight ratings also matter where you don't want conditioned air escaping into an attic.

Beware of over-lighting. The most common recessed layout mistake is simply putting in too many. Dimming helps, but a well-planned layout with fewer fixtures usually beats a dense grid on a dimmer.

Where installations go wrong afterward

Dimming, flicker, and LED compatibility

  • The problem. Older dimmers were designed for incandescent bulbs — a simple resistive load. LEDs are electronic, drawing far less current and behaving differently. An incandescent dimmer driving LED fixtures commonly produces flicker, buzzing, a narrow usable range, or fixtures that won't turn fully off.
  • Minimum load. Many dimmers need a minimum wattage to operate correctly. Replace five incandescent bulbs with five LEDs and the total load may fall below what the dimmer needs — which produces exactly the flicker people blame on the bulbs.
  • Compatibility is specific. Fixture and dimmer manufacturers publish compatibility information for good reason. Matching them is a specification decision, not a guess made at the wall.
  • Smooth dimming to low levels is a fixture quality issue as much as a dimmer one. Cheaper LED products often dim poorly at the bottom of the range regardless of what's controlling them.

If you have existing fixtures that flicker or buzz on a dimmer, that's usually correctable — and it's usually the dimmer, not the fixtures.

Control

Smart lighting: bulbs or switches?

Both work. They suit different households.

Smart bulbs The cheapest entry, and they need no wiring. The drawback is practical: if someone switches the wall switch off, the bulb loses power and stops responding to the app or voice control. In a household where not everyone is invested in the system, that gets annoying fast.
Smart switches and dimmers Replace the wall control, so the fixture works normally for everyone while still being controllable remotely. Better for whole-room and whole-house use, and better for guests and family members who just want to turn a light on.
The catch Most smart switches need a neutral conductor present in the switch box. Older properties frequently don't have one, since traditional switch loops didn't require it. There are workarounds for some models, but it's the first thing to confirm before buying.

  • Line-voltage outdoor lighting — wall packs, floodlights, security lighting, and entry fixtures — needs wet or damp-rated equipment appropriate to the exposure, and usually GFCI protection.
  • Low-voltage landscape lighting runs from a transformer at a much lower voltage, which makes cable runs and fixture placement in garden beds considerably safer and simpler. It's the usual approach for path lighting, uplighting trees, and washing façades.
  • Controls. Photocells switch lighting on at dusk automatically. Timers and smart controls handle scheduling. Motion sensors suit security applications — and combining a low background level with motion-triggered brightness usually works better than floodlights that blast on and off.
  • Worth avoiding: over-bright fixtures aimed where they glare into windows — yours or a neighbour's. Well-aimed, shielded fixtures at modest output almost always look better and cause fewer complaints than sheer brightness.

Plan the wiring route before landscaping goes in, if you have the choice. Retrofitting cable through established planting is more disruptive than doing it first.
