Two-prong outlets: what you can't just do
If there's no ground conductor in the box, a three-prong receptacle simply gives you an outlet that looks grounded and isn't — so anything plugged into it, and anyone using it, is relying on protection that doesn't exist. It's worse than the two-prong outlet it replaced, because at least that one was honest about it.
The legitimate options are:
- Run a ground. Best result, and sometimes practical depending on the route.
- Install GFCI protection and label the outlets accordingly. A recognised approach in many jurisdictions for ungrounded circuits, where GFCI provides shock protection even without a ground. The outlets must be labelled as ungrounded, and it's worth understanding that sensitive electronics still don't have the grounded path they expect.
- Rewire the circuit, where the wiring is at end of life anyway.
